In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Toyota bZ achieved a “Good” rating - the highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Chevrolet Equinox EV has not been tested.

The bZ has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Equinox EV doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the bZ AWD’s standard Downhill Assist Control allows you to creep down safely. The Equinox EV doesn’t offer Downhill Assist Control.

Both the bZ and the Equinox EV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota bZ is safer than the Chevrolet Equinox EV:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota bZ is safer than the Chevrolet Equinox EV:

Warranty

The bZ’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Equinox EV’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the bZ for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Equinox EV.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked fifth.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. Chevrolet is ranked 17th.

Engine

The bZ’s optional electric motors produces 50 more horsepower (338 vs. 288) than the Equinox EV’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Motor Trend the Toyota bZ electric motors is faster than the Chevrolet Equinox EV electric motors:

For better stopping power the bZ’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Equinox EV:

Suspension and Handling

The bZ Limited AWD handles at .82 G’s, while the Equinox EV RS pulls only .78 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The bZ Limited AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the Equinox EV RS eAWD (26.7 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the bZ has a 1.8 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Equinox EV (8.2 vs. 6.4 inches), allowing the bZ to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Toyota bZ may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 700 pounds less than the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

The bZ is 6 inches shorter than the Equinox EV, making the bZ easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The bZ has .4 inches more front legroom and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Equinox EV.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the bZ’s rear seats recline. The Equinox EV’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The bZ has a much larger cargo volume than the Equinox EV with its rear seat up (27.7 vs. 26.4 cubic feet).

Servicing Ease

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the bZ to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Chevrolet doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Equinox EV.

Ergonomics

The bZ’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Equinox EV’s standard power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. The Equinox EV’s optional passenger windows don’t close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the bZ the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Equinox EV can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The bZ’s standard Smart Key System allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless Access standard on the Equinox EV doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The bZ’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Chevrolet charges extra for heated mirrors on the Equinox EV.

Both the Toyota bZ and Chevrolet Equinox EV offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The bZ features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Equinox EV’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The bZ has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Equinox EV.

The bZ has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Equinox EV.

The Toyota bZ has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Chevrolet charges extra for Homelink® on the Equinox EV.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota bZ has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console for two separate devices. Wireless charging costs extra on the Equinox EV, and only charges one device.
